Harbor Beach Community Theatre Faces Big Challenge

The Harbor Beach Community Theatre is facing big changes – and a big challenge – if it wishes to remain operational as a movie theatre. Reports indicate that by the end of 2013, the film industry will only release digital movies, thus forcing theatres that currently utilize 35mm film prints to convert projectors and associated equipment to digital equipment or face closure.

Small-town theatres across America are struggling with how to afford the cost of the necessary equipment conversion; Harbor Beach is no exception. The estimated cost of the conversion for the Harbor Beach Community Theatre is more than $60,000, and the Theatre only has about $20,000 available to commit to the upgrade.

While the Harbor Beach Area District Library operates the Theatre, both entities are funded separately. Monies allocated to the Library, particularly tax dollars, cannot, nor ever have been, used for Theatre operations. The Theatre must be self-supporting.

For numerous decades, the Library has made a conscious decision that the Theatre would be run not as a profit-making business, but rather operated with the goal of breaking even each year and passing those savings on to the community in the way of affordable prices. Likely due to competing entertainment and electronic venues, theatre attendance has declined in recent years, despite the low prices.

Though the digital conversion comes with a hefty price tag, the biggest advantage is evident in a crystal clear movie. Rather than a 35mm film, which can get scratched and wear out, the movie is shipped on a computer hard drive. In addition to a visually better quality cinema, eventual savings would be realized in both labor and freight.

On behalf of the Harbor Beach Community Theatre, the Library Board would like to raise community awareness about this important topic. The Library Board wants to keep the Theatre open, but with a severe lack of funds to pay for the conversion and declining theatre attendance, options to remain open are limited. This nationwide, mandatory change in movie delivery format can only be accomplished at the Theatre with a collaborative effort and the financial support of the community.

The Harbor Beach Community Theatre’s history dates back almost a century. The Theatre was first opened to silent moves in July 1927, and the first “talkie” was shown on July 1, 1929, with admission set at 35 cents for adults and 15 cents for children.

We – all of us – likely have fond memories of movies watched and time spent at the theatre. The potential closure of the Harbor Beach Community Theatre is akin to a small town losing a part of its foundation. But is there enough interest in the community to save the Theatre, or is this iconic landmark just one more historic entity to fall because it cannot keep up with what’s termed progress in this rampant digital age?

The Library Board would like feedback from the community, so it can determine how best to serve the needs of the people. With enough positive community response, the immediate goal would be to establish a “Friends of the Harbor Beach Community Theatre” group, with fundraising efforts to begin promptly.

Small-town communities have always faced challenges, but it is the resilience of the people and their spirit of volunteerism, their willingness to assume responsibility, and that can-do attitude that have not only sustained small towns, but have made them thrive.
